A Weekend in Scotland

As a treat to ourselves we celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary in Scotland for the long weekend. Frommbly and Muzzypug joined us on our adventure, in hopes that they could be our tour guides.

On our first day we played tourist and hoped onto a "Hop-On-Off" bus to see the sights of the city. First stop...

Edinburgh Castle
We were dropped a the bottom of a hill and hiked up to the castle  gates, what a great view of the city could be seen, but with being so high up we worried we might be blown away by the high winds. Even though it was cold out, there were ice cream trucks and people walking around with triple scopes of ice cream.

Once inside we thought it best to fuel up on some good traditional Scottish food. Brendan was so excited to have haggis!  Not only did he have it for lunch, but then he had for breakfast the rest of our stay.

While Brendan enjoyed his haggis pot pie, we shared a table with  a lovely couple from Canada. We were delightfully surprise by the one o'clock cannon. That is right the cannon fires everyday but Sunday at o'clock, during our trip we hear it sound again, good time reference while out in the city.

With in the castle there are many mini museums, which cover the history of the military and events of the castle and surrounding city of Edinburgh.

Near the end of our exportation of the castle we went to the Great Hall, where we watched a talented man who explained and played traditional string and wind instruments found back as far away the 14th century He explained how the bow from an archer's bag became what we know now a days as a  violin and guitar. Another instrument he played sounded like a bumble bee trapped in a jar, which was known to be played following the even mean and as a result had bits of food that got stuck in it. Over time the rackett would become plugged, so it was taken to a repair shop, where it would often sit on a shelf continuing to rot from the inside out, if exposed to heat they would on occasion explode! The most fascinating instruments he played was called hurdy-gurdy. "The hurdy gurdy  is a stringed musical instrument that produces sound by a crank-turned rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses tangents (small wedges, typically made of wood) against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board to make the vibration of the strings audible." (wiki)

The castle was great, it even had it's own little chapel which is a hit with father's of the bride as it only seats 20. When we looked at it we were not sure how you would even fit 20 in there, but very cute none the less.

Palace of Holyroodhouse

Our second day in Edinburgh we explored an the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is where the monarchy stays in the summer months. We enjoyed walking around the grounds as we listened an audio guide.

No photos were allowed to be taken inside the place so here are some of the grounds, which were lovely in the spring.

After the tour we had tea the palace, we all know how much Stephannie loves afternoon tea.

A Look Back

While were where in a bit of a time of transition the blog was not yet up and going there was some fun and adventures that happened. Check out November :)

Sew Much Fun!

While Stephannie's parents where in town she and her mother made a number of sewing projects. The largest one was a quilt, that the two of them started a year ago. Stephannie's mother brought a suite case of fabric with her and they were able to finish cutting it and piecing it together. Stephannie now spends her free time hand quilting it. Here are some photos from there time working on projects.

Tea for Two

Stephannie and her mother have always loved going for high tea. For as along as Stephannie can remember she and her mother have gone for tea. Well how could she come all the way to Cambridge, England and not have tea? Well the only thing that is different from North America, is that "high tea" is called "afternoon tea" and it normally is not severed until 3:00 pm!

So the ladies made a tea date, had a lovely tea, and the library room at Hotel du Vin.

After tea they continued on to enjoy the art at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Both agreed there was too much pottery for their taste but enjoyed having time together.

Avebury Road Trip!

We awoke to wonderful sunshine in Cambridge, truly the nicest we have had in a while. Thinking that England is smaller then Canada we thought there would be nice weather in Avebury....nope! Wind and Rain, so much rain!!!

For those of you who don't know about this hidden national treasure, Avebury has its own stone circle, but it is larger then Stonehenge. In fact it is the largest stone circle in Europe. Brendan had a blast running around in the rain, he said it was like being in Vancouver just windier.

It is thought that the stone circle was constructed around 2600 BCE during the "New Stone Age."

Frommbly from far away!

Many of you may have met our pet sock monster, Muzzypug who we adopted one sunny Saturday while we were in Edmonton. Muzzypug has since gone on road trips and joined us on our spring break trip last year to  London, England.

Well after being in Cambridge for a few months Muzzypug was feeling down and wishing he had a friend that was  more like him, so he (with some help) sent a letter asking for a friend that might look like this:
Well at long last Muzzypug got word that his new friend would be traveling by air all they way from Canada. All he knew was his new friend likes chocolate biscuits and collecting antique spoons. So wanting to be a very good host he went out and got these things so his new friend would feel more at home. Muzzypug worried about his choices and waited, and waited, and waited....Often checking for the postal carrier (twice a day as the post comes TWO times a day Monday - Saturday).

At long last the post came this week and what came....

The excitement was almost too much! Muzzypug checked it was ok to cut the package open as he didn't want to hurt his new friend.
Muzzypug woke up his sleeping friend, and with a little help.... Frommbly was free from his carrier.

The cookies seemed to be a big hit... and Frommbly couldn't believe his luck when he opened a gift to find...

AN ANTIQUE SPOON!

Muzzypug and Frommbly seem to be becoming the best of friends already :)

Olive you!

Stephannie's parents arrived safely in Cambridge after some adventures on the London Underground and National Rail. After being in the UK for about a week Stephannie's father was really looking forward to going to the Jamie Oliver Restaurant.

Brendan and Stephannie's mother where delighted to see that they could start their meal off with olives, which were listed as:

WORLD’S BEST OLIVES ON ICE
Large green olives, black
olive tapenade & crispy  “music bread”

Given how clean the dish was, the dish seemed to live up to its name. The rest of us shared something was was called:

PUMPKIN &  SMOKED MOZZARELLA NACHOS
Crispy fried & served with  fiery arrabbiata sauce

This was more like a baked pasta. It was a great meal enjoyed by all.
